The new Netflix 2022 Arabic-language comedy-drama film is out and it caused A perfect disaster. What went wrong with this movie, let’s find out.
Perfect Strangers 2022 Movie Review
Perfect Strangers is a 2022 Arabic-language comedy-drama film directed by Wissam Smayra.
It is the first Arabic-language Netflix original film developed entirely by Arab production firms, and it is an Arab adaptation of the 2016 Italian film Perfetti Sconosciuti.
The movie tells the story of A group of seven close friends gather for dinner and decide to play a game in which they place their mobile phones on the table and agree to publicly discuss every call, text, and voice message that comes in.
What begins as harmless amusement rapidly turns into an undiscovered trail of unknown truths that disclose more than they care to divulge.
Wissam Smayra, a Lebanese first-time filmmaker, directs the film, which stars Lebanese multi-hyphenate Nadine Labaki, Egyptian actress Mona Zaki, and Jordan’s Eyad Nassar in a high-caliber pan-Arabic ensemble cast. It was launched on January 20 in 190 countries and quickly became a local sensation.
The new Perfect Strangers film is a fictitious drama that explores universal topics without taking a moral posture, instead asking the audience to have an open discourse and debate,” Netflix said in a statement to Variety on Tuesday, recognizing the controversy for the first time. “Led by a superb Arab ensemble intent on artistic quality, the film addresses difficult issues with heart and comedy.”
Due to a homosexual character and taboo-breaking plots, the Arabic version of the blockbuster Italian film “Perfect Strangers,” which is Netflix’s first Arab original film, is causing controversy in Egypt and across West Asia, leading the streaming giant to reply.
The Beirut-set “Perfect Strangers” remake has been one of the top trending topics on social media in West Asia, generally known as the Middle East, since its debut. The film has caused a chorus of indignation in Egypt for supposedly encouraging homosexuality and immorality, resulting in official complaints being filed with the country’s authorities as well as a large outpouring of support.
Various Egyptian news sites and CNN’s Arabic version have stated that Egyptian lawmaker Mustafa Bakri has spoken out against the film, saying it “incites homosexuality and treachery” in a message to Egypt’s House of Representatives speaker.
On the other side, Amr Waked, one of Egypt’s most well-known international actors, who has appeared in films such as Syriana, Lucy, and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, said on Twitter that anyone who was “afraid” that a movie may change their beliefs didn’t genuinely have faith. Hend Sabry, Ahmed Fahmy, Ghada, And El Razek are among the many celebrities who have shown their support for the film and its performers.
Marvel’s “Eternals,” which has the first MCU homosexual superhero, and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story,” which features a transgender character, are two recent examples of Hollywood films prohibited for theatrical release in areas of West Asia.
Perfect Strangers has been a major hit since its premiere, topping Netflix’s watching rankings in the region and highlighting the need for additional regionalized programming. It is presently the platform’s sixth most popular title in France.
