Best Sellers Movie Review
Best Sellers is directed by Lina Roessler and written by Anthony Grieco. It stars Aubrey Plaza, Michael Caine, Cary Elwes, Scott Speedman, Ellen Wong, Veronica Ferres, Victoria Sanchez, Elana Dunkelman, Frank Schorpion, Alexandra Petrachuk, Elisabeth Etienne, and Charli Birdgenaw.
In a last-ditch effort to save the boutique publishing house her father has left her after his death, an ambitious young editor goes on a book tour with an aging, bitter and boozy author who was one of the very first writers to really put that publishing house on the map.
I was really curious to see what this movie was going to do with the story about authors and publishing houses and editors and all of that, as well as what they were going to do with legendary Sir Michael Caine.
There’s a really great opening with his cat and that introduces you to his world and an introduction to his character’s very crusty personality.
The cast also includes Aubrey Plaza, which you will definitely recognize from the office as well as other movies, but she gives a very mature performance, and Ellen Wong plays her faithful employee.
And we also get to see Cary Elwes, who didn’t fall in love with him after watching The Princess Bride.
Seriously, have you not seen that movie? If you haven’t run, don’t just walk, but run and go see that movie. One of my all-time fave super cute. But anyway, sadly, he’s only in a tiny scene in this film.
There are some very tender touching moments, and I thought that it did kind of represent what’s happening in publishing and especially with small publishing houses today.
One of the things that I didn’t like about this movie is considering the movie is about literature, the writing is surprisingly pedestrian and disappointing.
I hate watching people smoke and drink themselves to death. That’s not a spoiler. I mean, we know that the father of this editor dies and she ends up running this publishing house. But just some of the other characters. And what happens?
There are some really bad, shallow acting moments. None by Sir Michael Caine, of course. Super cheesy music, extremely predictable plot and some of the side stories just completely disappear altogether with no resolution. And I thought that that was bad storytelling as well.
I think some people are going to be really bored. English and British profanity are used, including F-bombs both spoken and written.
A man urinates in public, that’s gross. Another man flips the bird, you see a woman throw up. that’s also gross. Drunken, selfish, indulgent behavior. And lots and lots of alcohol.
So some of the themes that are illustrated well, I think in the book are hope. Aging and being relevant. You know, this is an old author who has long past his heyday and the editor and him are trying to find a place where he can be relevant in the world again.
Mourning of someone’s death. Guilt, fraud. Communication. Responsibility, legacy. And what is that legacy that you want to leave and fear.
Ultimately, I thought the movie had a lot going for it, but it was very flawed, surprisingly in its writing and the storytelling.
So I am going to give Best Sellers 2021 a D.
Guys thank you so much as always for reading the review of Best Sellers 2021 movie. See you next time.
